Generating Ideas (P1,M1 U21)
LO1 (Unit 21) - Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief
(P1:U21, M1:U21)
The Brief :
The Task:
My task is to create a music magazine that is based in North London. I have to make sure that the magazine can be accessed online as well as in print.
Requirements for this task include :
* To Make example pages for a front cover & a double page spread - Implicit
* Creating an online and print based Magazine - Explicit
* Focused Around North London
* Showcase talent & venues in the area <---- Open to interpretation
* Produce Original content <--- Open to Interpretation
My First Ideas
* Target Audience - Between the ages of 16-25 as potential genres fit that.
* Genres for music - Grime, Rap, EDM, R&B, Drill, Rock
* The base price will be high quality however still affordable for younger ages. This means the price will be around £2.50 due to the average prices in North London being fairly high
* Exclusive interviews with popular artists of my chosen genre including promotional genre
* Free Products such as little toys or tickets to a show if you buy the magazine
1) How I viewed the client's brief - requirements
The requirements for the brief include:
Creating a front cover, double page spread and online version of a North London music magazine. This will then be in order to make people aware of the 'vibrant' music scene that is up and coming in North London. As a result, creating a magazine and online version will mean that the talent, popular genres and venues in the area can be showcased.
2) First thoughts for my possible ideas following my interpretation :
* Famous artists Who have/frequently perform in North London.
- Double Page spread can be focused around how diverse the artists in North London are and how they contrast to each other with backstories
- Front cover could be a good teaser to this using puffs to want people to read further into the magazine about the artists and do promos with them.
* Popular venues being used focused around in North London - Double paged spread including images of a popular venue
* Genres that are popular among North London - Can explore genres that are new to the scene or new to North London specifically - Can also focus a double page spread on a specific genre that is within North London (i.e grime, EDM, pop, etc).
3) Explanation of my three ideas :
1. North London artist magazine:

Artists such as Dizzee Rascal and Mark Ronson and many more, are based in and around North London and fall within the music genre of EDM this would be a good addition to North London music as it is something that is more well known in America and is underrated in North London. The colour scheme that would be used is often a mix of dark colours in contrast to vibrant colours. This colour scheme would be a good addition to my magazine as it helps my magazine stand out. I could also do exclusive interviews with other artists of genres like EDM to show how interesting and fun EDM really is.
As a second idea I thought I could do an EDM magazine focused solely on the actual lyrics of the EDM artists to show what they are really trying to say about their music
and can help gain a connection with the fans to the actual artists.
2. London Venue Magazine :
By exploring venues within North London, I am able to find out about the artists who play there most commonly and who only play there from time to time, this allows me to also see the quality of the venues which means we can evaluate which is the best venue (e.g. the interior of the venue high quality of low?)
For a venue based magazine I could include a review section of big venues and smaller venues and compare them to see which has better quality standards etc. This can give more recognition for smaller venues.
3. Genre Magazine
For a genre magazine my plan would be to do a magazine based around the genre of Rock. This is dominant in North London in places such as camden where rock is the main source of music. Knowing this i can base my magazine around artists playing rock in Camden and have interviews with Rock artists for their latest hits.
My target audience for this would be of the ages of 16-25 as predominately people of those ages.
The colour scheme of my magazine will be very vibrant and bold to show a contrast to the genre of Rock. It will be mainly Red, Black and white as well as grey. This will help fit well with the genre of Rock and its contents.
Conclusion :
To conclude, My final option will be Idea 3. This means that my target audience will be around the demographic of c1 and will be focused of the ages of 16-30, I Believe that the idea to do Rock will be really well aimed at North London specifically due to the high population of people in places such as Camden who love rock and will best fit the brief. I will ensure that i can meet all of the requirements of the client brief. The main price of the magazine should ideally be £3.50 as it is a good amount to charge for a rock magazine. I have overall chosen this genre as it fits North London music well and is a prime target to use to teach people about the genre of rock.
